Barr Holdings recertifies with the Carbon Trust Standard in the UK.
Reassessment confirms an absolute reduction in carbon emissions of 24%.

All Barr Holdings' operations achieved the Carbon Trust Standard in 2009.
Reassessment after two years has confirmed an absolute reduction in carbon emissions of 24%. This is equivalent to the emissions from taking over 1,800 cars off the road for a year.1
The Carbon Trust Standard is a mark of excellence that recognises companies for taking action to reduce carbon emissions. Based on a rigorous independent assessment, it certifies that organisations have measured, managed and reduced their carbon emissions across their own operations and are committed to reduce them year after year. After the first certification, Carbon Trust Standard bearers have to reapply every two years to stay Carbon Trust Standard certified.
"Achieving the Carbon Trust Standard in the UK further demonstrates how seriously we take our environmental responsibilities, and underlines the effectiveness of our rigorous efforts to reduce carbon emissions. This shows that we are at the forefront when it comes to carbon management best practices." said Ali Sheikh, Barr's Energy Manager.
"This certification reinforces our commitment to be a leader in corporate responsibility in the construction sector, and showcases our environmental credentials. Barr Holdings is in constant pursuit of greater benefits for our customers, employees and the environment, and we continually look to improve our environmental performance."
Some of the key initiatives that Barr Holdings undertook in order to re-certify with the Carbon Trust Standard include:
- Training drivers through the SAFED (Safe and Fuel Efficient Driving) scheme - saving 500 tonnes CO2e.
- Installing roof insulation at the main office in Ayrshire - saving 50 tonnes CO2e.
- Installing a heat recovery system in the IT server room - saving 33 tonnes CO2e.
Harry Morrison, General Manager of the Carbon Trust Standard said "We are delighted to re certify Barr Holdings' ongoing commitment to carbon reduction in the UK. Barr's ability to seek out new areas to improve energy efficiency proves that, with the right level of skills, tenacity and support, it's possible to improve carbon efficiency year-on-year - which has a hugely positive effect on the business."
Barr has been recertified since January 2011.
1 Based on 2009 and 2010 audited data, Barr Holdings emitted at least 5,450 tonnes-CO2 less than the benchmark year which is April 2008. According to the AEF, the average mileage for a car in the UK is around 9.000 miles per year (14,500 km). The average fuel consumption of UK cars now is about 32 miles per gallon (13.6 km per litre). This requires about 280 gallons of petrol (1,280 litres) per year, and that generates about 2.95 tonnes (2,940 kilos) of carbon dioxide.
