As part of the Trussell Trust’s network, both South and East Ayrshire have foodbanks within the local community to combat hunger and poverty. These foodbanks provide emergency food and support to local people who are identified as vulnerable people in times of crisis. Every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. A simple box of food makes a big difference, with foodbanks helping prevent crime, housing loss, family breakdown and mental health problems.
Prior to the current pandemic, poverty rates in the UK were thought to see as many as 1 in 5 people living below the poverty line, however this has significantly increased following the COVID-19 crisis. The current unprecedented circumstances and the economic backlash of COVID19, has seen many people across the country, including those in local areas, being made redundant or being furloughed to 80% of their salary, resulting in a decreased income and financial pressures where families have to prioritise paying bills/rents before eating. As such, this foodbank service is now more important than ever!
As we aim to make a real difference, Barr Environmental Limited have offered a donation of £500 to each of the South and East Ayrshire foodbanks as we aim to support the local community where we can through this crisis. Barr further urges everyone to pull together and help in this time of need by contributing what they can to ensure that no-one in our local community has to go hungry- every little helps!
